What a person asks, once the stranger has been talking a while. Answered by the stranger, who was in no hurry and never has been.
- So what is it this outfit does, for twenty-six dollars?
- Puts a name on a state form, and an address under it, and that is the whole of the trade as I understand it. What happens at the address after that is where the stories start. I have heard several. None of them ran long.
- Is anybody at the office, would you say?
- Sometimes there is an agent. Sometimes there is a chair, and a coat on the chair, and a window with a fine view of nobody coming. I have not been up. It is a long way up. That is in the name.
- Why does this outfit keep to the one state?
- The way I heard it, they looked at the map once, found this state, and did not see the need to look further. There is a lot of sky over Wyoming. A man could spend a career not getting to the end of it, and they intend to.
- What becomes of a letter that gets there?
- It gets there. That much I can say. It goes up on the shelf, and the shelf is high, and I have never heard of a letter coming down off it. It is not lost. It is just up.
- Say a man with papers walks up to the door. Then what?
- Then he knocks, and then he waits, and then he does whatever the state tells a man with papers to do when nobody answers, which is on the Wyoming page and does not change with the weather. The outfit is not part of that story. That is rather the point of the outfit.
- If it all goes wrong, what is the most they would put back on the bar?
- The fees from the three months before the trouble, which comes to $6.50. They would count it out slow. It does not take long.

I am saying I have been sitting here a while and I have not heard of anyone getting more.
- Could they let a fellow go?
- At any time, for any reason or none, without notice and without refund. That is in the terms, and the terms are short, and that is the longest line in them.
- Does the twenty-six dollars come around again?
- Every year, like the geese. The state wants its form every year and so the outfit wants its figure every year, and neither of them has ever once forgotten.
- Is there a phone a person could ring?
- There is a number, and I have seen it rung. Somebody answers, some evenings. Whether that somebody is at the office or at the far end of a bar like this one, I could not tell you, and I am not sure they could either.
- Why is it called Sky High?
- Because the office is up there, they say, and because the price is not, and a man likes a name that only tells half the story. It gives the other half something to do.
- Would you recommend them?
- I have not said that. I have said I admire the way they have gone about it. There is a difference, and the difference is about twenty-six dollars, and you are the one holding it.
- Is twenty-six dollars a fair figure for this?
- It is a figure. It is between the ones above it and the ones below it, which is where most figures live. Whether it is fair depends on what you think nothing ought to cost, and folks differ on that more than you would credit.
