Settle in. This is the Wyoming part, and the state wrote most of it, and the state does not hurry either. You sit at a bar long enough in this state and the country comes up. It always does. These are the places the stranger would name, in the order he would name them, with a photograph somebody else took, since he never carried a camera and never saw the need.
the Lamar Valley
A wide valley, a slow river, and a herd somewhere in the middle distance that does not care what you paid for anything. He said it was the only place he ever felt properly small. He said that was a compliment.

The mountains east of the park, the ones that do not get talked about as much. He liked them for that. He said a range that keeps its own counsel is a range worth sitting across from.

Big water, high up, cold enough to make a point. He said it looks calm from the shore and is not, and that he had known a few businesses like it.

the Gros Ventre
The river, the slide, the country around both. Half a mountain came down there once and dammed the water, and the water had opinions about it. He said that was the closest thing to a lesson he ever took from a landscape.

The whole Milky Way in a pool of hot water, and a little steam off the top, like a sarsaparilla poured slow. A wiser fella than m'self said nothing about it. He just looked.
